The impact of sexual depictions in the media on adolescents

In this blog, I would like to talk about the ways in which sex being portrayed in the media negatively impacts young people in different ways. I am interested in everything from depicting just a negative stigma against sex, to failing to show the risk of things such as pregnancy and STDs. Even with proper education, it can be hard to evade the constant pressures and impacts of sex in the media, so more research needs to go into dealing with this growing problem as the world becomes digitalized. Young people are particularly susceptible to the impacts of the images they are exposed to, as well as developing a warped idea of sexual ideals as well as body image issues. The issue goes beyond just not understanding the basics of how sex works and it is most important to begin exposing young people to the risks that come along with it as soon as they begin learning about what sex is through the media. The negatives that can occur from such acts are rarely shown and therefore, kids are not given a realistic image of what to expect.

Out of curiosity, I have created a brief, anonymous survey to see your thoughts on sex in the media. Please take a moment to answer to help me understand the general feelings about sex in the media.
Click here to take the short, anonymous survey!

I would also recommend taking a look at this video of kids discussing how sex in the media affects them and their peers and how it impacts kids as a whole.

  1. The issue your blog is dealing with is clearly relatable in today's society. It talks about a problem which has always been here. I really appreciated the details in which you went, even stating all your sources which gives us more material to work on if we wish to read more about the issue. Also, your use of other formats such as videos and a survey in this article are quite intriguing and pleasant. But I believe it would have been better if the survey had a more academic outcome by etaching us something or if you followed it by an article to explain it, because it doesn't really feel needed in its current form.
